Can Termites Infest Block Homes?
One of the most commonly believed myths about termites is that they do not invade block homes. This myth is frequently believed because people believe that termites will only eat through wood. Termites prefer wood but they will eat the wall and floor studs of your block home just as easily as they will in a wood-frame home.
Do Termites Only Live in the South?
Many people believe that here in the United States termites are only found in the south. This is not a true statement. There are over 40 different species of termites in North America. Most of these are found in the southeast part of the United States. Termites have also been found in every state but Alaska though.
Do Termites Have a Purpose?
Another common myth about termites is that they are only destructive pests that serve no purpose. The truth is that termites provide a valuable service by breaking down wood in forests into soil. We need them to perform this function. Termites are truly one of earth’s greatest natural recyclers. When trees are cut down so that land can be developed many people believe that all termites on that property are removed with the trees. Many termites actually live underneath the ground so they are still on the property when the trees are cut down. The problem now becomes that they do not have the trees that were previously on the property to eat so they will have to find a new food source. Many times they will quickly find the wood that is used to build on the ground and use it as their new food source.
Do Ants Eat Termites?
You may also have heard that termites have no enemies. This is a myth. Ants and termites do not like to live on the same property. Ants are extremely territorial. They will not willingly live on the same property as termites. The ants will sting the termites until the termites eventually find a new home to avoid being stung.
Are Termites Easy to Get Rid Of?
Some people believe that termites are easy to get rid of. This is absolutely not true! Termites are extremely hard to get rid of. Since they live inside of your walls getting rid of them is a true struggle. If you end up with termites in your home you will want to hire a professional immediately to help you get rid of them before they cause more damage than they already have.
